The first book in the series written in Iraq describes Thompson's pilgrimage to Vatican City and the eventual deployment to Iraq. The book American, Interrupted describes in detail his arrival in Baghdad and eventual settlement of an abandoned officers academy in east Baghdad. In the first few pages, he experiences his first encounter with Iraqi prisoners and Iraqi civilians living near his base.
